Derek Shea

Derek Shea is in his eighth year coaching for Western United.  He currently is coaching our u11 boys’ team.

  • He has guided 3 Western teams to MA State Cup championships and four Region1Regional appearances including taking one team to the Region 1 semifinals. He has also directed two teams to the Region 1 Director’s League semifinals.
  • Derek was an outstanding player at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. His team twice made the NCAAs and Derek was a three time All New England player as well as a three time All League selection.  He was selected to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Hall of Fame in 2000.  After college, he played for the semi-pro Albany Alley Cats of the USL.
  • Derek has coached both girls and boys high school soccer for twelve years where his teams have been Western Mass semifinalists four times and finalists once.  He is currently the head boys Varsity coach at Amherst High School. Derek led Amherst to the 2010 Western Mass Division 1 finals. He also coached the Springfield Sirens to the W-2 League 2000 National Championship as well as serving as a volunteer assistant for the UMASS men’s program for over a decade.
  • Derek has his NSCAA National diploma as well as his MA teaching and administrative certificates. He has a M.Ed from UMASS and is currently an assistant principal.
